Today is National Ag Day. It is a time when producers, agricultural associations, corporations, universities, government agencies and countless others across America gather to recognize and celebrate the abundance provided by American agriculture.

Their outreach is focused on the Agriculture Council of America's (ACA) core values:

1. Understand how food and fiber products are produced.
2. Appreciate the role agriculture plays in providing safe, abundant and affordable products.
3. Value the essential role of agriculture in maintaining a strong economy.
4. Acknowledge and consider career opportunities in the agriculture, food and fiber industry.

In 2013, agriculture was an $11.8 billion industry in Louisiana. Values rose 3.8 percent from 2012, but are forecast not to rise much in 2014 due to high soybean and corn prices, along with cooler than normal temperatures.

“Records broke records for the second year in a row, which is very unusual in agriculture,” said John Westra in a press release on Monday, the LSU AgCenter economist in charge of the Ag Summary. “We had ideal conditions during the fruiting or growing season for these crops.”
