Mayor-President Melvin "Kip" Holden is urging East Baton Rouge Parish citizens to monitor weather reports through local news stations today and to prepare for severe thunderstorms and possible flooding should it occur.

The National Weather Service is warning that rainfall of 2-4 inches in a short time frame is possible with isolated higher amounts. Given the recent rains, the soil is very saturated and foreasters are warning that there is an increased risk for rapid runoff that could quickly lead to flash flooding concerns.

Mayor Holden is urging local residents to get their errands done early this afternoon if at all possible, and to stay inside during the inclement weather.

"We are asking everyone to check their emergency supplies and confirm that they have adequate provisions and a family emergency kit in place, especially a sufficient supply of prescription medicines and other necessities," Mayor Holden said. "If East Baton Rouge Parish receives the rainfall that is forecast, we could experience flash flooding, so we need to make arrangements now to prepare."

Mayor Holden said the citizens should call (225) 389-2070 if they experience any flooding, downed trees or require other services provided by the Department of Public Works. Updates on local conditions will be available through or

"I also want to take this opportunity to remind our residents that we encourage the use of the Buddy System in preparing for any emergency," Holden said. "Once you are certain your home and family are safe and prepared, please reach out to an elderly neighbor or family member or someone who lives alone and may need help getting ready."
