Governor Jindal declares State of Emergency for Tropical Storm Karen

BATON ROUGE, LA (NBC33) — Governor Jindal has declared a State of Emergency due to Tropical Storm Karen.
"The National Weather Service has issued a Hurricane Watch, a Tropical Storm Watch, and a Coastal Flood Advisory for the next 72 hours for parts of southeastern Louisiana, placing the lives and property of the citizens of this State in jeopardy," the declaration noted.
As of 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 3, the storm had maximum sustained winds of 65 mph.
The National Hurricane Center predicts that Karen could briefly become a category 1 hurricane by Friday, Oct. 4. The projected path has the storm making landfall early Sunday morning in the Mobile Bay area.
“We are fully prepared for a potential heavy rain event,” Plaquemines Parish President Billy Nungesser, said. “All pump stations are operational and we have crews on stand-by.”
The state of emergency extends from Thursday, October 3, 2013 through Friday, November 1, 2013, unless terminated sooner.
