With all the accumulated water, rising rivers, and flooding this week, the call center in Livingston Parish is stepping up to help people impacted by the recent storms.

"Anytime we have an excessive amount of rain it floods in the house," says Jerry Johnson.

Johnson is used to the rain and even more so, used to it putting a damper on his day.

"And it came in two or three inches in the house and we had to vacuum it all out and wait for the rain to stop."

But many people's situation is worse, with not inches but feet of water flooding their homes. The OEP Call Center usually provides assistance for flooding from overflowing rivers or storms, but in this case it's the non-stop rain. Now, they’re doing what they can to extend a helping hand before the damage gets worse.

"We don't think there are many homes with water in it but if there are, we want to make sure we can get it taken care if," says Mark Herrell, the Director at the Emergency Preparedness Center.

Even though Jerry didn't use the centers service this time, he knows how important it can be for others.

"The OEP center is very useful in the parish everyone in the parish uses it calls come in 24 hours a day when during crisis time," noted Johnson.

Parish officials want to remind people who can and can't seek help if they have flood damage. "If you don’t have insurance we hopefully can help you," said Herrell.

Because flood damage is so common for Johnson, and because he doesn't have insurance, he has to deal with each mess one day at a time.

"We were there this morning working on it."

The call center is open 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. every day this week. The number is (225) 686-3996. Officials will ask for your name, address, and contact number, whether or not you have flood insurance and how much water is in your home.
