2011 Hurricane Season sets new record
STORMTRACKER33 — With Gert's inability to strengthen into a hurricane, the 2011 Atlantic Hurricane Season has been put in the record books. It is the first time since records have been kept, that none of the first seven named storms of a season became a hurricane. The old record of six occurred in the 2002 season. Records go back to 1851, but are less reliable farther back in time. In case you're curious, the lack of hurricanes so far this season is not a harbinger of the rest of the season. We are now entering the peak of the season, which runs from mid-August through late October. Don't be surprised if we have several hurricanes develop in this upcoming time period.
We are always tracking the tropics here in the STORMTRACKER33 Weather Center, and we will keep you updated with up to the minute information as it becomes available.
