Today marks the end of the 2012 Atlantic Hurricane season, one that produced 19 named storms, of which 10 became hurricanes and one became a major hurricane. The number of named storms is well above the average of 12.
The outward signs of recovery were everywhere Monday across the Northeast nearly two weeks after Superstorm Sandy struck: Power restored to tens of thousands, bridges and tunnels reopened, and limited train and ferry service up and running.
Hurricane Sandy is barreling toward the Northeast with sustained winds of 90 miles per hour. The powerful storm has picked up speed and is expected to make landfall sometime tonight in southern New Jersey.
