Two men are in custody after police say they shot a state trooper during a traffic stop. It happened around noon today. The trooper tried to stop the driver of a white Chevrolet van for speeding near the Ramah exit on Interstate 10 East. The van exited the bridge and came to a stop.
Police say when the trooper got out of his vehicle, the driver of the van, 21-year-old Robert Daniel Armendariz, opened fire on the trooper. Armendariz and the passenger, 20-year-old Fabian Cruz Herrera, fled the scene.
Troopers apprehended the suspects on Interstate-10 Westbound near the Henderson exit.
The trooper was shot in the abdomen and the leg. He was taken to a local hospital for his injuries, but police say he is stable condition.
