The Tulane University football team has accepted an invitation to play in the 2013 R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl, marking the program’s first appearance in the New Orleans-based bowl and its 11th bowl game in school history.

Tulane (7-5, 5-3 C-USA) will take on Louisiana-Lafayette (8-3, 5-1 Sun Belt) on Saturday, December 21 at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome.  Kickoff is slated for 8 p.m. CST and the game will be broadcast live on television on ESPN, on local radio on WMTI 106.1 FM ‘The Ticket’ and nationally on ESPN Radio.  The Green Wave completed its regular season this past Saturday at Rice, while UL concludes its regular season next Saturday on the road at South Alabama.

“We are grateful for the opportunity for our young men and coaches to participate in this hometown event that will kick-off the 2013 bowl season,” Tulane Director of Athletics Rick Dickson said.  “This is a great reward for a successful campaign and it is great that our team can finish in front of friends, family and our fans.”

“We’re looking forward to having Tulane in this year’s game,” R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl Executive Director Billy Ferrante said. “It’s very exciting for us to have a team located right in our own backyard, and we couldn’t be more pleased to share this bowl experience with their team, coaches and fans.  Having two Louisiana teams playing in the Dome for the first time will undoubtedly let the good times bowl.”

Tickets for the R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl are $40 and $60 each and will be located on the west side of the Superdome behind the Tulane bench.  The first 1,000 fans to purchase their tickets will receive a commemorative bowl T-shirt and a ticket to the men’s basketball game on Dec. 21 and Dec. 22.

In preparation for the R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl tickets, all 2013 Tulane football season ticket holders, Tulane Athletics Fund members, and those with commitments for Yulman Stadium seat reservations are guaranteed to be seated first if tickets are purchased by Dec. 6. Anyone can purchase tickets starting today but will be seated after the priority seating deadline of Dec. 6.

Please contact the Tulane Athletics Ticket Office, which is located on the first floor of the Wilson Center on Ben Weiner Drive, between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., over the phone at 504-861-WAVE (9283) or via the Internet at www.TulaneGreenWave.com.

“We are excited about the opportunity to participate in the New Orleans Bowl and to play one more game in the Superdome,” Tulane head coach Curtis Johnson said.  “This game is a great reward for the hard work and dedication our coaches and players have demonstrated throughout the 2013 season.  We look forward to playing an in-state opponent and cannot wait to begin our bowl preparations.”

In Johnson’s second season, Tulane produced its first winning campaign since 2002 and also won seven games for the first time since the `02 campaign.  The Green Wave turned in a fourth place finish in the Conference USA West Division and produced a 5-1 record on its home field, the Mercedes-Benz Superdome.

The Green Wave is making its first bowl appearance since 2002 when TU downed Hawai’i, 36-28, in the inaugural ConAgra Hawai’i Bowl, and Tulane will be playing a bowl game in its home city for the first time since 1940 when the fifth-ranked Green Wave fell to top-ranked Texas A&M, 14-13, on New Year’s Day.  Tulane also faced Temple in the inaugural Sugar Bowl game and downed the Owls, 20-14, on Jan. 1, 1935.

Tulane and Louisiana-Lafayette have met on 26 occasions since the first meeting in 1911 and the Green Wave leads the series, 21-5, but fell to the Ragin Cajuns, 41-13, in Lafayette on Oct. 6, 2012.  This will be the first meeting between the two schools in a bowl game.

TU was 1-1 against Sun Belt Conference schools this season, falling at home to South Alabama, 41-39, but downing Louisiana-Monroe on the road, 31-14.
