UPDATE: Southern University has released head football coach Stump Mitchell. NBC33's Matt Boudreaux is tracking this story, and found out SU officials say they'll 'reassign' Mitchell to other duties at the university.

UPDATE: Southern University will hold a press conference at 5:30 p.m. to discuss the future of Stump Mitchell.

ORIGINAL STORY: Southern Athletic Director William Broussard tells me there was not a meeting this morning with Jaguar head football coach Stump Mitchell asking him to resign.

Broussard says those reports claiming the third year head coach was asked to resign Thursday morning are "completely fabricated."

Mitchell is catching a lot of heat after his team fell to 0-2 Thursday night after losing to Mississippi Valley State 6-0.

Mitchell is in the third and final year of his contract and has a record of 6-18 overall.
