Southern falls to New Mexico, 66-12
Albuquerque, N.M — The Southern Jaguars started the season off on a bad note Saturday when they dropped their opener 66-21 to New Mexico. Head coach Stump Mitchell watched on the sidelines as his team fell behind 35-0 in the first half.
The Lobos combined to rush for 347 yards against the Southern defense. Both Southern quarterbacks threw a touchdown in the loss. Starter Dray Joseph passed for 163 yards with a touchdown toss to Lee Doss (one interception). Backup quarterback J.P. Douglas passed for 79 yards and a two-yard pass to Charles Hawkins (no interceptions). Southern was penalized 10 times for 60 yards.
The Jaguars enter their bye week and will take on Mississippi Valley State Thursday September 22 in A.W Mumford Stadium.
