Nicholls State's first three batters combined for nine of the Colonels' 16 hits and six RBI, but the effort was not enough as the Nicholls baseball team dropped a 14-11 decision at Southern Tuesday night.
Chris Murrill (Mobile, Ala./Alabama Southern CC), Josh Swenson (Applevalley, Minn./North Iowa Area CC) and Scott Moseley (Enterprise, Miss./Meridian CC), who drove in a team-high three RBI, recorded three hits apiece.
Jake Parrish (Albuquerque, N.M./Northeast Oklahoma State) falls to 0-3 on the season after giving up four runs through the first inning of action.
After scoring four runs in the first, the Jaguars added another in the second and six more in the fourth to jump out to an 11-0 lead.
Nicholls (11-14) finally got on the board with two in the fifth and scored nine in the final three innings of the night, but Southern held on thanks to three insurance runs in the fifth.
The Colonels biggest inning of the night came in the eighth, when Nicholls took advantage of five walks and a hit-by-pitch from Jaguar pitchers.
Drew Erwin, who threw the final two innings of the game for Nicholls, held Southern hitless, allowing just two baserunners.
