BATON ROUGE, LA (NBC33) — Southern head football coach Dawson Odums knows his team is fortunate.
“We are blessed to be at the top. But we have to take care of business,” he said.
After dropping an overtime game to Alcorn last weekend he’s not sure how many more weeks Southern (4-4, 4-2) can lose and remain in first place in the SWAC’s Western Division.
“You control your own destiny but we have to play better at the start of football games,” he said.
Start slow, finish fast. That’s been the way things have worked for most of the season. Odums and his team have only been able to muster up 29 first quarter points through eight games.
But, the ball gets rolling eventually.
They have posted 57, 42 and 63 points in the second, third and fourth quarters respectively. Unfortunately, sometimes the surge has been too late.
“We got to figure out a way to execute in the first, second, third and finish teams off in the fourth,” Odums added.
Of course that’s a lot easier said than done. He’s leaning on his wide receivers to help stop the trend.
"We think they are the strength of our football team. We need them to lead us in the first quarter like they do in the fourth quarter."
The Jags will take on Texas Southern (2-6, 2-5) Friday night in Houston. Kickoff is set for 8 p.m.
