Broussard one step away from being SU Athletic Director

Southern

POSTED: Thursday, March 15, 2012 - 10:23pm

UPDATED: Tuesday, May 8, 2012 - 12:10pm

At first glance, William Broussard may look like one of the athletes walking around Southern's campus. But with the approval of Southern's Board of Supervisors later this month, Broussard will be in charge of them all, including their coaches.

“To be approved unanimously by the committee is great. I’m appreciative of them and I’m excited to get to Baton Rouge and Southern University and get to work.” Broussard said just minutes after a vote by the Board’s Athletic Committee.

Almost one year later, Southern University may have found the right person for the job. At 33 years old, William Broussard is just one step away from filling the athletic director void on the bluff.

It will be no easy task to get things turned around; the university is financially strapped and currently clawing its way out of academic troubles.

“He is the right person for the job because of fundraising, academic support for student athlete,. good strong communication skills an enthusiasm and energy to come in full time and move the athletic department forward,” Chancellor James Llorens said

The young, but successful, athletic director hopeful plans to hit the road and get to work if approved to gain support on the financial end.

“I don't leave any stones unturned and ill dig as deep into the donor base as I need to and then come around for seconds when it comes to getting support.”

Broussard adds that the relatively large market to work with will benefit.

“The size of the area and the size of the alumni base provides a lot of opportunities."

When it comes to straightening up grades, the Crowley Louisiana native says that will be no problem

“Many of institutions have been penalized under APR (academic progress rate) and many have emerged from it. It’s not rocket science, it's not physical science it's not even difficult.”
