SLU's Artigues named rising star in ranks of college baseball coaches

SLU's Artigues named rising star in ranks of college baseball coaches

National collegiate baseball writer and blogger Kendall Rogers of Perfect Game named Southeastern Louisiana University baseball coach Jay Artigues one of his ten rising stars in the ranks of college head coaches Monday.

Artigues, a native of Bay St. Louis, Miss., enters his eighth season in charge of the Lion program with a 240-164 won-loss record, the second-most wins in school history, and several nationally-recognized recruiting classes.

“There are several successful programs in Louisiana, but perhaps no program has made as many strides over the past five seasons as Southeastern Louisiana,” Rogers wrote. “The Lions have progressed into a consistent NCAA postseason contender, thanks to Artigues.”

Southeastern has won at least 35 games in each of the last four seasons, including the two highest single-season win totals in school history during the 2010 and 2012 seasons.

“The Lions finished the 2010 campaign with a 40-19 overall record before going 35-22 in '11. Southeastern almost reached an NCAA Regional last season with a good RPI and 39-21 overall mark, but fell just short. Either way, Artigues has done some special things in Hammond, La.”

Artigues' program has also produced current Arizona Diamondback Wade Miley, the Sporting News' 2012 National League Rookie of the Year.

“I'm honored and humbled at the same time,” Artigues said. “This honor is a tribute to all the coaches I've worked with and the kids that have come through this program. They've all had a hand in getting us to this point.”

Joining Artigues on the list is fellow Southland coach David Peirce of Sam Houston State, Samford's Casey Dunn and Indiana State's Rick Heller. Fans wishing to read the article can find it at http://www.perfectgame.org/Articles/View.aspx?article=7858.
