Teams, parents, referees, tournament officials and volunteers gathered at the Baton Rouge River Center Thursday for the 2014 US Youth Soccer Region III (South) Championships opening ceremony, kicking off the weeklong event. Preliminary games begin Friday at 7:45 a.m. at the BREC Burbank-Soccer Complex in Baton Rouge, La.

US Youth Soccer Region III Director Jesse Harrell was in attendance at the opening ceremony, and he said the tournament committee and city of Baton Rouge are excited to host the many talented players who will be competing in the US Youth Soccer Region III Championships for the next week.

“Fourteen of the teams here today will become the 2014 Region III Champions next Wednesday and Thursday, winning the right to battle for the National Championship in Germantown, Md.," Harrell said. "Last July, we were proud to see NASA 12 Elite II (GA) crowned National Champions for Under-19 Girls. Best wishes to each of you to follow in their footsteps."
