UPDATE: Saints GM faces eavesdropping scandal

Sports

POSTED: Tuesday, April 24, 2012 - 6:00pm

UPDATED: Tuesday, April 24, 2012 - 6:04pm

UPDATE: Colonel Mike Edmonson tells NBC33 the FBI invited state police to work on this investigation that accuses the Saints of breaking a state law.

All of this is because an ESPN report stated sources said when Loomis took his seat during home games in 2002 – 2004, he was able to plug an earpiece into a jack that was under the desk in front of him that allowed him to listen in opposing teams play-calls.

Edmonson said his agency is investigating whether any state laws were violated.

According to Louisiana law, state police is the only agency that can conduct a wiretap.

"We will look at the allegations, and we will work with the FBI,” stated State Police Coloniel Mike Edmonson. “I have assigned someone in New Orleans to work with them. We will determine if the allegations are factual in nature, and if they are, what area of state law did they come in contact with."

Edmonson did not want to speculate on what consequences Loomis and the Saints could face.

Regardless if these accusations are true or not, it's certainly a big blow to the Saints organization on the PR front just two days away from the NFL draft.

We'll be sure to keep you posted on any new developments right here on NBC33 News.

UPDATE: NBC33 has learned that the Louisiana State Police are now looking into the wiretapping scandal involving Saints GM Mickey Loomis. We will keep you updated on this story as more information becomes available.

ORIGINAL: The New Orleans Saints appear to in the middle of yet another scandal.

A report by ESPN says Saints GM Mickey Loomis eavesdroped on visiting coaching staffs by using an electronic device in his Superdome suite from 2002-2004.

Saints spokesman Greg Bensel says the report is "one thousand percent inaccurate".

Loomis is currently facing an eight-game suspension for his part in the bounty program.
