Report: Brees furious with Saints over franchise tag
NEW ORLEANS, LA (WDSU) — The Saints' record-setting quarterback Drew Brees is not happy after the team placed a franchise tag on him over the weekend.
WIST-AM reports that Brees is "livid" about the tag and not receiving a long-term contract.
According to the radio station, which cited sources in Brees' camp, he will not sign the franchise tag deal. The Saints and Brees have until July 15 to put together a long-term deal.
The franchise tag means Brees will be paid $14.4 million for the coming season, and the Saints will retain exclusive negotiating rights for one year.
In 2011, Brees set NFL records with 468 completions, 5,476 yards passing and a completion percentage of 71.2. His prolific passing numbers helped the Saints set a new NFL high for total offensive yards in a season with 7,474.
He has been with the Saints for six seasons, leading them to a win in the 2010 Super Bowl.
