Former linebacker Junior Seau found dead

POSTED: Wednesday, May 2, 2012 - 4:00pm

UPDATED: Wednesday, May 2, 2012 - 4:04pm

Longtime NFL linebacker Junior Seau was found dead today in his home in California by his girlfriend in his home in Oceanside.

Police say they are investigating the case as an apparent suicide.

Seau's mother appeared before a large crowd gathered outside her son's home. She mournfully thanked them for loving her son.

"I say today...thank you. You guys showed your love to my son. I don't understand who did this to my son, but I prayed to God, ‘Please take me...take me...leave my son.’ But it's too late," said Luisa Seau.

"This case is being investigated as a suicide,” stated Oceanside Police Chief Frank McCoy. “A hand gun was found near the body. As you can see, this is still a very fluid situation, and our investigators are continuing their investigation in this matter."

Seau is best known for playing for the San Diego Chargers and leading them to the Super Bowl in the 1994 season.
