‘Magic Bird’ takes courtside drama to the theatrical stage

NBC NATIONAL NEWS — The rivalry that defined basketball in the 1980s has moved off the court and onto the stage.
The play "Magic Bird" tells the story of the rivalry and friendship between the Lakers' Magic Johnson and Larry Bird of the Boston Celtics.
The rivalry actually began when they were both in college and their teams met for the NCAA Championship.
After they both left college magic went to the Lakers and bird to the Celtics and they became two of the greatest players in NBA history.
The goal of the play is to give audiences a peak inside the relationship that developed off the court out their competition on the court.
Magic said that he and bird had input into the script and the production.
"We were concerned about helping out with the script and making sure our voices came out the right way,” Magic Johnson said about the show. “And making that the story was good so that the fans could relate to it - and both of us had input there. I came to the rehearsals, making sure that, Kevin, making sure that, you know, he was smiling like I smile, so I gave some notes there."
