Baton Rouge, La (NBC33) — No waiting until January to find out if an LSU player will get college football's highest honor.
Cornerback Tyrann Mathieu is one of five finalists for the Heisman.
According to NBC33's football expert Derek Ponamsky, Mathieu is probably not going to walk away with the trophy this year.
Ponamsky, of BayouBengalsInsider.com, says the Honey Badger is undoubtedly one of college football's best players, but he is just a sophomore, never took a single snap on offense, and he had a setback with a mid-season suspension.
Ponamsky says Robert Griffin III is his choice for this year's Heisman.
"I think at the end, the star power at Baylor is going to be the difference,” stated Ponamsky. “But for only being a sophomore, it's a fantastic story for Tyrann, and will propel him in the offseason to be one of the headliners of college football next year."
Over 900 votes have been cast, mostly by media members and former Heisman winners. The winner will be crowned this Saturday in New York.
