Practice officially begins for LSU Men's Basketball team
BATON ROUGE, LA — – Coach Johnny Jones and his LSU men’s basketball team went through a crisp two-hour practice Tuesday on the main floor of the Pete Maravich Assembly Center as the road to the 2013-14 basketball season officially started.
With a large contingent in the Maravich Center taking pictures and making notes for the first 35 minutes of the session, the Tigers did some defensive drills and then went 5-of-5 for the first of a couple of times in practice, working on transition defense. The Tigers worked on 5-on-0 fast break and then went 5-of-5 the last 10 minutes.
The Tigers, under the new rules for men’s basketball this year, will have 30 practices over 42 days leading to the season opener on Nov. 12 at UMass. The Tigers open the home schedule on Nov. 16 against Northwestern State. Ticket information for the 2013-14 season can be found at LSUtix.net.
Coach Jones was joined in his second season opening practice by returning assistant coaches Charlie Leonard and David Patrick along with first-year assistant Corey McCray. As Coach Jones stated in his media briefing on Monday, 14 players joined the practice, 12 scholarship players (which includes transfer Keith Hornsby who will be eligible in 2014-15) and two walk-ons.
“I thought the opening practice was really enthusiastic and very competitive,” Coach Jones said as the players finished up with some free throw shooting. “I thought our guys did an excellent job of really competing at a high level. I obviously like the level of intensity and that excited me. It’s good to have the number of experienced guys we had back from last year and I thought the new guys did a good job picking up the fast break. It was also good to have the opportunity to go 5 on 5 and up and down a little bit and allow them to compete.”
