Mettenberger gives LSU offense a new look

LSU

POSTED: Tuesday, March 27, 2012 - 10:00pm

UPDATED: Tuesday, May 8, 2012 - 1:41pm

“They are coming alive this spring. I’ve never seen them run like this or throw like this. I think Mettenberger has changed a lot of things.”

That quote by junior cornerback Tharold Simon has to be music to Tiger fans ears. There is now just one sheriff in town when it comes to the starting quarterback position at LSU in Zach Mettenberger.

“As far as from the beginning of spring, there is just a bond between Zach and the receivers. I think we will get to show that off this Saturday,” sophomore wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. said.

“We were watching practice from last year with coach Kragthorpe and looking at the guys and how much better we have gotten as a whole this year,” junior Zach Mettenberger said.

All eyes will be on the junior college transfer Saturday afternoon when the Tigers hold their annual spring game.

“We’ve been practicing very hard and hopefully that carries over to the spring game. This weekend’s game will be real simple, very vanilla. We won’t show a lot on offense or defense. We are just going to try and execute or plays and try and be perfect,” Mettenberger added.

It’s not expected that the Tigers will pull out all the stops and tricks offensively. But defensively the LSU players say they will be raring back.

“I’m really looking forward to smashing some of my teammates. They have been talking a lot of trash. But they still haven’t seen me and some of my teammates on defense on a Saturday night. It’s going to get pretty violent,” junior defensive end Sam Montgomery said. “This isn’t one of those things where you lay back and say hey I’m here. It’s one of those things where you say hey I’m here.”
