After a spectacular weekend in leading the LSU women’s basketball team to a Barclays Invitational championship, freshman guard Raigyne Moncrief has been named the Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Week, the league office announced on Monday.

Moncrief, a native of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., combined for 40 points, 12 rebounds and 11 steals in wins over Rutgers and Michigan in Brooklyn. She is averaging a team-best 13.4 points per game this season, which is second among all SEC freshmen.

Against a quality Rutgers team, Moncrief poured in a season-high 27 points – 19 in the second half – to lead No. 15 LSU to a 69-65 win on Friday. The 27 points were the most by an LSU true freshman since LaSondra Barrett scored 27 at Arkansas on Jan. 8, 2009. Moncrief added seven steals, which ranked fifth in LSU single-game history.

She also shattered the LSU freshman single-game record for free throws by draining 15, which also ranked second in overall LSU single-game annals. It was the most made free throws by an LSU player in 22 years since Pokey Chatman shattered the school record with 18 against Georgia on Feb. 10, 1991.

Moncrief then tallied a game-high 13 points and four steals in a 64-62 win over Michigan in the championship game on Saturday. She was named the Barclays Invitational Most Outstanding Player after averaging a tournament-best 20.0 points per game.

Dating back to last season, LSU has claimed six SEC Freshman of the Week honors. Danielle Ballard was the recipient five times last year.

Moncrief and the Lady Tigers (6-1) return to action against Indiana State at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday in the Maravich Center. Over 4,000 East Baton Rouge Parish school kids have been invited to attend the game as part of a field trip. Parents of those children can purchase special $2 tickets for admission.
