LSU's Austin Nola named finalist for Lowe's senior CLASS award
LSU

POSTED: Wednesday, April 25, 2012 - 10:13pm

UPDATED: Thursday, May 3, 2012 - 4:59pm

LSU shortstop Austin Nola is one of 10 finalists for the 2012 Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award.

Ten NCAA® baseball student-athletes who excel both on and off the field were selected as finalists. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence – community, classroom, character and competition.

Nola, a product of Catholic High School in Baton Rouge, is a four-year starter for the Tigers and helped lead LSU to the 2009 national championship. This season, he is hitting .301 with 11 doubles, one homer and 25 RBI, and he has a .970 fielding percentage with only four errors on the year.

Nola was named to the 2011 SEC Academic Honor Roll with a 3.25 gpa in sport administration. He is also the leader of the LSU baseball program’s community service effort, earning 2011 Southeastern Conference Community Service Team recognition.

Nola, who has started in 195 games during his LSU career, was a 2010 second-team all-SEC selection, and he was the MVP of the 2010 SEC Tournament.

An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.

The finalists were chosen by a media committee from the list of 30 candidates announced in February. Nationwide fan voting begins immediately to determine the winner. Fans are encouraged to vote on the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award website through June 11. Fan votes will be combined with media and Division I men’s head coaches’ votes to determine the winner.

Lowe’s, an official Corporate Partner of the NCAA, will announce the Senior CLASS Award® winner during the 2012 NCAA College World Series®, which will be held June 15-26 in Omaha.
