LSU Soccer club headed to National Championship Tournament

BATON ROUGE, LA — The LSU Soccer Club defeated the University of Texas 2-1 in the National Intramural-Recreational Sports Association, or NIRSA, Region IV South Tournament finals on Sunday, Oct. 28, earning the club its first-ever bid to the NIRSA National Campus Championship Series, or NCCS, National Soccer Championships.
The tournament, held Oct. 26-28 in Richardson, TX, was hosted by the University of Texas-Dallas. To reach the finals, LSU defeated Sam Houston State University 4-0 before falling to Southern Methodist University 1-2 in pool play. After advancing to an elimination game, LSU defeated Texas Tech 2-0 to earn their spot in the championship game.
“The team really rose to the occasion this year,” said LSU defender James Dobravolsky. “As a team we realized our goal and achieved it together. The chemistry of the club team this year is outstanding. Constant communication and the level of friendship we have has really translated into results this year.”
The 19th Annual NIRSA NCCS National Soccer Championships will be held in Memphis, Tenn., Nov. 15-17. The Championship Division is comprised of the top 24 men’s and top 24 women’s teams from across the nation. Teams qualify for the Championship Division by receiving a bid to participate, generally through successful competition in regional tournaments. The LSU Men’s Soccer Club is a student-run organization whose mission is to create a competitive men’s soccer program for the student body at LSU, as well as teach players on the team the importance of teamwork, communication and leadership. The team has competed in the Texas Collegiate Soccer League since 2010. The club’s roster features roughly 25 members who have a standing goal of establishing themselves as one of the best men’s soccer teams in the state of Louisiana.
