Omaha, NE (NBC33) — Here is an inning-by-inning recap of #4 LSU's game against UCLA in the opening round of the College World Series:
1st Inning: Aaron Nola allows one Bruin to reach base, but picks him off. The Tigers get a double from Mark Laird, but strand him at second base. LSU 0, UCLA 0
2nd Inning: Nola makes quick work of UCLA, setting the Bruins down in order. Christian Ibarra nearly hits a home run for LSU, but the ball is caught at the warning track in left field. Ty Ross hits a two-out single, but cannot advance. LSU 0, UCLA 0
3rd Inning: Nola gives up a walk, but puts away the next two UCLA hitters to continue his strong start. Adam Plutko sets down Stevenson, McMullen, and Laird in order. A true pitchers' duel in the works. LSU 0, UCLA 0
4th Inning: UCLA gets its leadoff batter to reach for the first time. The Bruins successfully sacrifice him to second. But Nola holds the runner there, and gets a groundout and a strikeout to end the Bruins' first scoring threat. Mason Katz opens the scoring with his 16th home run (the first any player has hit in this College World Series). Ibarra nearly follows with a home run to the same spot, but it falls just short. Is that all Nola needs? LSU 1, UCLA 0
5th Inning: Another leadoff runner stranded by Nola. He hasn't allowed an earned run since May 23 in the SEC tournament. LSU with a groundout and two pop flies; both pitchers are dominating this game. LSU 1, UCLA 0
6th Inning: An error by Ty Ross puts the leadoff runner on second for UCLA. A fielder's choice and a sacrifice fly bring the run home, tying the game. Mark Laird's second base hit and a walk to Katz gave Raph Rhymes an opportunity, but he field out to center field to end the inning. LSU 1, UCLA 1
7th Inning: Nola hit a batter, putting the leadoff man on base for the fourth straight inning. Kevin Williams stole two bases to get to third with two outs, but a harmless grounder kept him from crossing the plate. Plutko looks stronger as the game continues, allowing a walk to Jacoby Jones but nothing else. LSU 1, UCLA 1
8th Inning: Another error leads to another run. With two outs and a runner on second, a routine ground ball should have gotten Nola out of the inning, but Alex Bregman lets it bounce off his glove, allowing the runner to come home. UCLA makes the first move into the bullpen, ending Plutko's strong outing. Bregman's poor night for LSU continues with a groundout. UCLA 2, LSU 1
Top 9th Inning: Nola's night ends after eight innings, having allowed five hits and two unearned runs. Nick Rumbelow replaces him and throws two wild pitches, but escapes without giving up a run.
Bottom 9th Inning: Katz reaches on an error to lead off the Tigers' last frame, but Rhymes erases him by grounding into a double play. Ibarra walks to keep hope alive, and Jared Foster runs for him. Tyler Moore pinch hits and singles to center field. Jones popped out to right, ending the game.
LSU will face #1 North Carolina at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, with the loser to be eliminated from the tournament.
