BATON ROUGE, LA — While the eyes of the football world may be on New Orleans this weekend for the Super Bowl, the LSU Law School students will be putting down the books and putting on the pads to raise money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation in Barristers Bowl IX.
The game, which kicks off at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 2 at BREC’s Olympia Stadium, is a culmination of months of work by the LSU Law Football Club and its commissioner, Dixon Wallace McMakin, who praised the program and its participants: “This is a phenomenal time for our players to relive their football glory days and give back to the community by supporting a great charity.”
Proceeds from the game will benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation, a charitable organization focused on enriching the lives of children with life-threatening medical conditions. This year’s Wish Kid will be 9 year old Charlie from Pride, Louisiana, whose wish is to go to Disney Land. Though admission to the game is free, donation stations will be in place for those who want to help with the fundraising efforts in addition to a silent auction.
Additionally, thanks to generous donations from Plucker’s Wing Factory and Baton Rouge Coca-Cola, there will be food and drinks at the pre-game tailgate starting at noon. Other sponsors from Baton Rouge have also contributed to the club’s effort, including Campus Federal, Taylor Porter, CCA of Louisiana, Tin Roof Brewery, Southern Marsh Clothers and Acadian Ambulance Service.
This is the ninth year of the gridiron classic pitting the “Purple Team” against the “Gold Team.” Last year, the Purple squad won in a heated 9-7 battle. “Last year the Purple Team out lasted us,” said Gold team coach/player and third year law student John Milazzo. “Things will be different this year; we are ready for another shot.”
After eight match ups between the two squads, the Purple team is 6-2. If you are interested in assisting with the event by making a donation, please contact Dixon Wallace McMakin LSULAWFOOTBALLCLUB@gmail.com.
