A game day sign outside an LSU fraternity united fans of opposing teams in the hours before kickoff. Unfortunately, it was due to feelings of outrage.

“I’m a student at Kent State and in a fraternity. This is disgraceful, insulting, and in poor taste,” one fan wrote on the NBC33 Facebook page.

The same sentiment were echoed by hundreds of Tiger fans in an endless stream of online comments.

“Not an LSU fan’s way,” an LSU fan wrote. “Very disrespectful. We don’t act like that in Louisiana, at least decent folks don’t.”

The sign in question was placed outside the entrance of the Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity. It said, “Getting massacred is nothing new to Kent St.”

The image circulated the Internet shortly after NBC33 News posted the story. On Sunday, Sept. 15, Eric Mansfield, Executive Director of Media Relations at Kent State University, released an official statement.

“May 4, 1970 was a watershed moment for the country and especially the Kent State family. We lost four students that day while nine others were wounded and countless others were changed forever.

“We take offense to the actions of a few people last night who created an inappropriate sign and distracted from the athletic contest on the field.

“Our new May 4 Visitor Center, which opened less than a year ago, is another way in which Kent State is inviting the country to gain perspective on what happened 43 years ago and apply its meaning to the future.

“We would invite those who created the sign to visit our campus and learn more about the event which forever changed Kent State and America.”

A representative with LSU told NBC33 News that the LSU Police Department was contacted on Saturday, Sept. 14 regarding the sign. Officers were dispatched to the fraternity house and asked them to remove the sign. They complied with the request and it is no longer hanging.

Today I'm ashamed to be an LSU alum. During my undergrad days at LSU (mid-80s) I took it upon myself to read Michener's book on the Kent St. massacre. Insensitive stupidity from college football hooligans is all too common today..sadly.

The sign posting was a pure show of stupidity and the members of that frat house should be placed on probation for the rest of the year and if anymore acts like that happen be disolved and removed from the LSU system , the thought of making fun of a horrible crime and then making light of it is something that is not forgiveable and pure stupidity and should be dealt with accordingly. Very poor taste on the frat house and its idiots who reside there, how would you feel if it were your family

I am a die-hard LSU Fan from Louisiana. I appologize for these insensitive Morons. What Stupidity!!!!!!! I hope the Dean of LSU punishes these immature young punks to the fullest!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Throw these punks out of the Fraternity!

What a stupid, stupid, insensitive thing to do. Was there nobody at that fraternity that had the sense or decency to say, "this is wrong!"? Actions like this really go a long way to improving LSU"s image elsewhere.
