BCS playoff system to be presented to national committee today

The BCS is close to approving a four-team playoff to determine the national champion in college football.

The 12 university presidents that make up the BCS Commission will present their plan to the Presidential Oversight Committee in Washington today.

The committee is headed by Virginia Tech's Charles W. Steger, and also includes one university leader from each of the 11 major football conferences and independent Notre Dame.

They have been working out the details of their plan for six months and expect their proposal to be approved.

The plan to be presented would go into effect during the 2014 season. The national semi-final would be played on New Year's Eve or New Year's Day. The championship game would be played about 10 days later.

The games would be played on neutral sites and would rotate year-by-year among the four current BCS games.

The site of the championship game would be bid on, which is the way the NFL handles where the Super Bowl is played.

The plan also calls for the four teams in the playoff to be determined by a selection committee, though the makeup and size of that committee has not yet been determined.
