For the first time since 2003, the LSU women's track & field team won an outdoor NCAA National Championship by defeating Arizona State in the 4x400 relay -- the meet's final event -- to edge the Sun Devils, 67-63.
Tied entering the relay, LSU passed Arizona State late in the first leg and never looked back. The Lady Tigers finished second to Penn State (3:27.69) in the event in 3:28.33.
Senior Kelly Baptiste, who won the women's 100 on Friday and finished fourth in the 200 earlier today, ran her ninth race of the week to extend the Lady Tigers in the relay lead and clinch the title.
Richard Thompson (20.44) finished second in the 200 meters to Florida State's Walter Dix (20.40), and the Tigers also finished runner-up to the Seminoles in the team competition, 52-44. Auburn tied with LSU for second with 44 points.
