LSU Women's Hoops recruiting class in Top 10
BATON ROUGE, La — One day after the addition of 6-foot-2 forward Sheila Boykin of Los Angeles, Calif., the LSU women's basketball team's signing class has jumped to No. 10 in the ESPN.com Hoop Gurlz rankings, giving the program its first top 10 class since 2008.
Boykin, the No. 27 high school player in America as rated by ESPN Hoop Gurlz, signed with the Lady Tigers on Wednesday. Her addition gives LSU two of the nation's top 30 players as 6-foot-4 forward Krystal Forthan (No. 5) signed with the program during the fall period. The Lady Tigers also boast one of the top international prospects with 6-foot-1 guard Anne Pederson of Copenhagen, Denmark.
LSU's top 10 signing class comes two months after the hiring of Nikki Caldwell as the program's seventh head coach. Caldwell, one of the nation's elite coaches and recruiters, brought UCLA to new heights in three seasons as head coach of the Bruins prior to coming to Baton Rouge. Prior to that, she spent six seasons as an assistant coach under Pat Summitt at Tennessee.
The signing class is the highest ranked for LSU by ESPN HoopGurlz since the Lady Tigers brought in the nation's fourth-ranked class following a fifth straight Final Four appearance in 2008.
Here is what ESPN.com had to say about the addition of Boykin and LSU's talented signing class:
"With the arrival of Nikki Caldwell, big things are expected on the recruiting front ... Forthan is a potential All-American and All-SEC player and a part of the new wave of hybrid players who have post height, guard athleticism and the ability to dictate what the opposition does defensively. She can rip a rebound right off the rim and start the break or swat a shot and then fill a lane with ease. Forthan finished her high school career by reaching the state championship game in Texas and she will look to lead LSU to championship of its own in the SEC. Combining her length and athleticism with Boykin's power on the interior should make for an imposing matchup for SEC opponents."
