LSU goes through first full pads practice

UPDATED: Sunday, August 7, 2011 - 3:09pm

After two days of split squad practices, Les Miles put LSU through its first practice as an entire unit on Saturday morning here at the Charles McClendon Practice Facility.

Saturday’s workout was the only practice of the day for the Tigers as LSU will spend the afternoon meeting and lifting weights. The Tigers are scheduled for one practice on Sunday before putting on the full pads for the first time on Monday.

“Today was the first full team practice and the tough part is getting enough reps for everybody,” Miles said following the workout. “It was very similar to the other first full squad practices that we’ve had around here. It was sloppy, but that’s part of it. It takes probably five practices to get the speed of the game where you want it. We’re a ways away from that but hopefully it will come quick.”

Miles said it appears that the freshmen appear to be adjusting to their new environment.

“They are getting their reps,” Miles said of the rookies. “We are trying to bring the intensity to them rather than bringing them up to the intensity. We’ll hit more and we’ll do more live drills.

“Once you institute the procedure around live drills, suddenly the tempo of practice is adjusted. We’re not where we need to be yet, but it will come in the next few days.”

Among the freshmen who have been singled out for their performance during the first three days of practice include: defensive tackle Anthony Johnson, wide receiver Odell Beckham and running back Terrence Magee.

LSU’s roster reached 105 on Saturday as sophomore offensive guard Josh Williford joined the team after missing the first two days of practice due to two deaths in his family.
