Tigers on Target: From the end of 2010 to the BCS, again

Sports

POSTED: Monday, January 9, 2012 - 9:00am

UPDATED: Monday, February 13, 2012 - 10:36pm

Technically speaking, the 2011 LSU football season began the same day the 2010 season was complete. The Tigers capped of an 11-2 year with Cotton Bowl victory in the land that is Cowboy Stadium.

But while the school embraced a good year, fans wanted to know, would their head coach be with them come fall.

Once again, Miles to Michigan fell through. With their coach on board, the program began gearing up for what has become, one unforgettable season.

Spring and summer passed, and fall was in front and August was eventful, but the drive to Dallas, took a detour.

Recently hired Offensive Coordinator Steve Kragthorpe took a step back after some troubling news. The Tigers we're in search of a new OC, that's where Offensive Line Coach Greg Strudrawa stepped in. Since then the pair haven't missed a beat.

Once again the Tigers were in the spotlight both nationally and locally, but not for what their play on the field.

A tradition of breaking late night curfew, turned into a saga, surrounding Shady's bar.

Just a week later Senior Quarterback Jordan Jefferson was arrested and charged with Second-Degree Battery. LSU was suddenly with out their starting quarterback, indefinitely.

Eight days later, it was another senior, Jarrett Lee, making his biggest start of his career.

The formerly, often boo-ed, quarterback directed the LSU offense past the third best team in the land. Lee's luck didn't run out there. After four games under center, the Tigers were still unbeaten, and perhaps most importantly battle tested. Needless to say, the Tigers were back on target

The next four games proved the Tigers were for real. Defeating four SEC opponents by a combined margin of 124 points. Also, the next four games went much like the previous groups of 4's, all victories, including and epic win over Alabama in Tuscaloosa.

The game of the century, part one, was a hit, won by a kick 9 to 6.

Smooth sailing the rest of the regular season had the Tigers playing for a conference championship. Even with home-state advantage, Georgia could derail LSU from moving to 13 and 0.

The Tigers overcame adversity in the past, but tonight in New Orleans, we will see if they can they overcome Alabama once again.
