Ten Tigers on Coaches' All-SEC football teams

POSTED: Tuesday, December 6, 2011 - 10:48pm

UPDATED: Wednesday, December 7, 2011 - 1:02am

Ten LSU football players have earned the distinction of first or second team All-Southeastern Conference as voted upon by the SEC Coaches, the conference office announced on Tuesday afternoon.

It ties the school record set by the 2007 squad that also produced 10 Tigers on the Coaches All-SEC teams.

Six LSU players earned All-SEC first team recognition, including offensive guard Will Blackwell, offensive tackle Alex Hurst, wide receiver Rueben Randle, defensive end Sam Montgomery, cornerback Tyrann Mathieu and cornerback Morris Claiborne.

Four Tigers appeared on the Coaches' All-SEC second team, including Drew Alleman, Ryan Baker, Spencer Ware and Brad Wing.

Blackwell and Hurst started all 13 games for the Tigers and paced the team to 2,797 rushing yards and a school-record tying 35 rushing touchdowns. They also anchored a line that led the SEC by only allowing 14 sacks this season.

Randle made 50 catches for 904 yards and eight touchdowns. The junior from Bastrop, La., averaged 18.1 yards per reception which ranks second among the conference's top 10 receivers.

Montgomery led the team and finished third in the SEC in sacks with nine, and he also tallied 13 tackles for a loss on an LSU team that ranks second nationally in total defense only giving up 252 yards a game.

Mathieu produced a team-leading 70 tackles and added 6.5 tackles for a loss, seven pass breakups, six forced fumbles, five fumble recoveries and two interceptions on defense. In addition, Mathieu scored four touchdowns, including two dynamic punt returns against Arkansas and Georgia.

Claiborne finished second in the SEC in interceptions with six this season, and his 11 career interceptions ranks sixth in LSU history, tying him with Greg Jackson (1985-88), Tony James (1992-95) and Craig Steltz (2004-07).

Alleman led the SEC in field goal percentage at 88.9 as he made 16-of-18 kicks this season with a long of 44, and he has made 10 straight field goals with his last miss at West Virginia on Sept. 24.

In 12 games, Baker produced 58 tackles, 3.5 tackles for a loss and 1.5 sacks, and he served as a leader on the defensive side of the ball all season.

Ware started 10 games for LSU and picked up 700 yards rushing and a team-high eight rushing touchdowns, tied with freshman Kenny Hilliard. Ware also caught 10 passes for 75 yards and one touchdown.

Wing boomed 23 of his 50 punts inside the 20-yard line and tied Ole Miss's Tyler Campbell for the longest punt in the SEC this season with a 73-yarder at Alabama.

Blackwell, Claiborne, Mathieu, Montgomery and Wing also earned first team All-SEC status from the Associated Press.

LSU has placed 26 players on the Coaches' All-SEC first team and 46 total players on the first or second team since head coach Les Miles' first season at LSU in 2005.
