NEW ORLEANS, LA (NBC33) — A few fights broke out after thousands of LSU and Alabama fans crowded into the French Quarter after the BCS National Championship game in the Superdome on Monday night.
"There were two women who got into a fight, an LSU fan and an Alabama fan, and they had a little slapping contest," witness Earl Bernhardt said.
Bernhardt said some fans were "fighting mad" after the game.
"I heard of one person that somebody hit him and busted his nose open," he said.
New Orleans police said a woman was shot in the leg at a tailgating party on South Rampart after the game. Another woman was hit in the head with a beer bottle on Decatur, and a third woman had her iPhone stolen near Bourbon and Saint Ann.
"There were a couple of scuffles out in the street, but we're prepared for this. We know it's going to happen. There's so much emotion in these games, and LSU fans were so devastated by the defeat that there was a lot animosity going around," Bernhardt said.
Ochsner Baptist Medical Center reported a significant increase in emergency room traffic due to alcohol related injuries Monday night.
No serious injuries were reported.
