Saints push forward after win against Lions

Sports

POSTED: Sunday, January 8, 2012 - 6:51pm

UPDATED: Sunday, January 8, 2012 - 11:50pm

It was another record setting night for the New Orleans Saints. The Who-Dats destroying the Detroit Lions in the Mercedez Benz Superdome Saturday night.

One week after closing out the regular season with a franchise single-game record 617 yards against Carolina, the Saints set an NFL postseason record with 626 yards Saturday night.

The Saints had so much offense, their punter had an easy night as Sean Payton's team became just the 7th team in postseason history not to punt in a game.

With Saturday's win, the saints advance to an NFC divisional playoff matchup against the 49ers. The Saints and 49ers have met 71 times in the regular season, but this will be their first playoff matchup.

“We're pulling out all the stops,” Drew Brees, said. “We play aggressive, we're not trying to apologize for that. We always have.

“I think that gives the guys in our huddle a lot more confidence just knowing that we're not going to pull the reins back. We're pedal to the metal and there's times where guys are going to be asked to make plays, make gutsy calls, and we got to make them work."

“You know couple times during the first half we got some turnovers and didn't capitalize on them,” Matthew Stafford, Lions Quarterback, explained. “But still had the lead at halftime, we were playing well - we just couldn't keep up in the second half.

“They played great on offense - I got to give them a lot of credit,” he continued. “Got some turnovers when they needed them on defense - and they put the ball in the end zone quite a bit."

The Saints-49ers game is set for 3:30 Saturday on our sister station FOX44. The winner advances to the NFC Championship game.
