LSU leaves Baton Rouge to head to New Orleans; Miles honored with another award

Sports

POSTED: Wednesday, January 4, 2012 - 8:33pm

UPDATED: Monday, February 13, 2012 - 10:39pm

Coach Miles and the gang got one huge send off in Baton Rouge before making that 80 mile trip down to the Big Easy.

The team is staying at the Riverside Hilton. Tonight, they're getting settled in. Then, it’s five days of practices, press conferences, and sightseeing before the big game with Alabama in the Mercedez-Benz Superdome on Monday night.

The Tigers were a little late getting to New Orleans, but reporters were entertained by a traditional New Orleans brass band that set up in front of the Riverside Hilton as fans and the media waited for Les Miles and his Tigers.

Within the hour the team and Miles arrived in New Orleans. Coach Miles immediately headed straight to a conference room at the Hilton, where he addressed the media. NBC33’s Matt Boudreaux is in the middle of all the action and excitement in New Orleans, and he'll have the coach’s reaction to everything and much more tonight on NBC33 News at 10.

Our opponents in the BCS matchup, Nick Saban's Crimson Tide, also arrived in the Big Easy today. The team flew in from Alabama.

The Tide is 11-1 on the season; that one loss came from LSU. The Tide's coaching staff says they'll have no mercy on the Tigers.

Also today, Coach Les Miles received an honor; he's been named the Walter Camp 2011 Coach of the Year.

The award is selected by coaches and sports information directors from across the country. Miles is the second LSU coach to win this award; former coach Jerry Stovall received the honor in 1982.

Stay with NBC33 leading up to the BCS Championship game. This Monday, tune in at 5:00 p.m. for a special program, “13-0 & One to Geaux”. You'll hear from former LSU Tigers and get their thoughts on the 2011 LSU Tigers. Catch a sneak peak here.

Then at 6:00 p.m. we'll be doing live reports from New Orleans as part of our hour-long special, “Tigers on Target”. The entire NBC33 staff and the staff from our sister station, FOX44, will be covering every angle of the LSU-Alabama game with live coverage from the Big Easy. “Tigers on Target” will be simulcast on FOX44 as well.
