Brees, Saints negotiations not going so well

NEW ORLEANS, LA (WDSU) — Negotiations between the New Orleans Saints and quarterback Drew Brees aren't going so well, according to ESPN.com’s Adam Schefter.
Schefter reported that the Saints and Brees still remain a ways apart in producing a long-term contract.
If the two sides are unable to come to an agreement, Saints management could apply the NFL's franchise tag to their quarterback. The move would mean Brees would earn just over $14 million for a one-year term.
The Saints have two other free agents -- Marques Colston and Carl Nicks. Nicks sounded off on Twitter that he wouldn't be in favor of a franchise tag saying, "I want to be a saint but I want what's fare [sic]"
Last week, Brees told WDSU that he was "optimistic" that a deal would be met.
Share "It's ongoing," Brees told WDSU last week. "I'm very optimistic. ...There's progress being made. I'm very confident, very hopeful something will be done in the next few weeks."
The 33-year-old Texas native has led the Saints to the team's only Super Bowl title and to three consecutive playoff appearances. In 2011, he broke several league records, including the coveted mark for passing yards in a single season.
The deadline for applying the franchise tag is March 5, and free agency begins March 13.
