BRCC finally gets softball team, coach optimistic about improving

There’s a new team in town and if all goes as planned they're here to stay.

After several unsuccessful tries, the BRCC Softball Team has come to fruition. Tonight is first game in the program’s history; it’s just the beginning of what could be a big deal in the community.

“We haven't made it that far yet and this is our first spring season,” stated BRCC Softball Head Coach Stephanie Zellner. “I just want everyone to know that we are here and we are here to stay.”

BRCC Athletic Director Neil Hayhurst thinks the team needs to “build a foundation, so we are not just here for a couple years, so the young ladies in the community want to go to BRCC to play softball.”

Head coach Stephanie Zellner and her Bears are providing another option for locals to continue their athletic career.

“There’s not a lot of two year programs in Louisiana that have softball programs,” said Zellner. “It’s another opportunity to keep the kids in state and prepare them to go on to the four year (programs).”

“There is so much talent in the Baton Rouge area that you don't have to go out of state to recruit. So it’s nice to get the men and women from the state to our campus,” stated Hayhurst.

The team is compiled of 13 Louisiana natives and two out-of-state girls. Their coach says it's a work in progress, and time will only help her squad get better.

“Most importantly, I think that we just need to come together and play well and learn,” said Zellner. “I think I saw some good things, some things we need to improve, but as a whole, I think we did well considering that having nine new girls on the field for the first spring season. Every time you step on the field, the goal is to get better - every day you get better.”

The Lady Bears dropped their first contest 6 to 2 against Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College. Their home games will be played at Oak Villa Softball Complex, but they're on the road this weekend taking part in a tournament in Gulf Shores, Alabama.
