Jacob O’Mara from Prairieville is headed to Las Vegas to compete at the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (NFR) Dec. 1 -10.

Qualifying for rodeo’s championship event is quite an accomplishment for a bull rider that joined the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association one year ago. Not only did O’Mara qualify, he did it in fourth place with $94,879 in regular season earnings. O’Mara is on a hot streak after winning the most money at the All American ProRodeo Finals in Waco, Texas, then the title at the American Royal Rodeo in Kansas City, Mo., in November.

He is hoping to keep that momentum rolling at the Wrangler NFR and leave with pockets full of money and possibly a world title.

The top 15 contestants in the bareback riding, steer wrestling, tie-down roping, team roping, saddle bronc riding, bull riding and Women’s Professional Rodeo Association barrel racing will all be competing for $6 million and prizes. Las Vegas has played host to the event for the past 27 years where it has been held at UNLV’s Thomas and Mack Center. It has seen continued growth in prize money and fan support with many activities surrounding the rodeo. Each of the contestants will compete in 10 individual rounds which pay $17,885 for first place. On Dec. 10th their total scores and times will be added together for average placings. First place in that category will win $45,865 and a saddle as the WNFR champion.

World championships are determined by adding a contestant’s WNFR and regular season earnings together. Those champions have the esteemed honor of wearing the traditional gold buckle that signifies they are the world’s best in the sport of rodeo.
