BATON ROUGE, La (NBC33) - LSU pitcher Tyler Jones surrendered just one run in seven innings to help LSU defeat Sacred Heart, 6-1. Jones (3-0) struck out four batters, while giving up just three hits.
The Tigers broke a 1-1 tie in the sixth inning when Tyler Hanover hit a sacrifice fly that let Trey Watkins score. LSU scored two more runs in both the seventh and eighth innings.
"We needed a game where we had to come through with clutch pitching and hitting in pressure situations, and we did that tonight. Tyler (Jones) pitched very well, though he gave up a few too many walks (4) for my liking. He did make some good pitches to get out of the jams he faced," LSU head coach Paul Mainieri said following the game.
Austin Nola had two hits on the night including an RBI and a run. Nola upped his batting average to .359.
LSU is 4-0 in midweek games this season.
The Tigers (12-1) will take on No. 6 Cal State Fullerton (8-3) in a three game set this weekend in Alex Box Stadium. Kurt McCune will get the start on the mound for LSU in the opener at 7 p.m. on Friday. Freshman Kevin Gausman will start Saturday’s game at 2 p.m. and senior Ben Alsup will take the mound in the finale on Sunday at 1 p.m.
