The Louisiana School for the Visually Impaired (LSVI) is hosting an athletic conference of the South Central Association of Schools for the Blind (SCASB) on January 24-26, 2013.

Approximately 170 visually impaired students from Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi, Texas, Oklahoma, and Georgia will compete in wrestling and cheerleading matches. They will also participate in performing arts presentations.

The activities will begin with the performing arts presentations at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, January 25. The event will be held at LSDVI’ s campus auditorium.

On Saturday, January 26, the wrestling and cheerleading matches will begin immediately after the opening ceremony, which will be held at 8:00 a.m. in the gym. The campus is located at 2888 Brightside.

LSVI is honored to have a special alumnus perform at the event. Scott Moore, a 1988 graduate of LSVI, was the first American to ever win a gold medal in judo in the Olympics or Paralympics (2000). He also has 2 bronze medals (1996 and 2004). He was the IBSA (International blind sports association) world champion in 1998 and has bronzes from 1995 and 2003. He was the assistant coach for the 2009 Paralympic Judo team. Also in 2009, he was named the Paralympic coach of the year by USOC. He was the 2nd visually impaired person to be ranked on the USA Judo elite roster.
