HAMMOND, LA — Three members of the Southeastern Louisiana University football team have been placed on the College Football Performance Awards Watch List for the upcoming 2012 season.
Defensive back Robert Alford (Hammond, La.), linebacker Ricky Irvin (Westlake, La.) and punter Matt McCormick (Covington, La.) were named to the Watch List following their performances during the 2011 season.
Alford, a former Hammond High product, earned second team All-Southland Conference honors after establishing himself as one of the league’s elite cornerbacks. He started in all 11 games for the Lions, finishing second in the Southland with five interceptions and fourth with seven pass breakups. Alford finished the year with 52 tackles (45 solo) and his five interceptions was the eighth-highest single-season total in school history.
Irvin started nine of the 11 games he appeared in for Southeastern and finished third on the team with 85 tackles (59 solo), including a team-high 13 tackles for loss. The first-year starter ranked fourth in the Southland in tackles for loss and 11th in total tackles. He finished with a season-high 17 tackles – including 15 solo and two for loss – at McNeese State.
McCormick, a former Covington High product, earned honorable mention All-Southland Conference honors after taking over starting punting duties midway through the 2011 season. He averaged 41.5 yards per punt on 36 punts on the season and had seven punts of 50-plus yards, including a season-long 61-yard effort against Stephen F. Austin. In his first full season in Hammond in 2010-11, Westermann earned first-team All-Southland Conference and All-Louisiana honors while also earning All-Region honors and capturing tournaments at the BancorpSouth Intercollegiate(hosted by Ole Miss) and Jim West Intercollegiate (hosted by Texas State).
While not being able to compete again as a collegiate golfer, Westermann will focus on obtaining his degree from Southeastern while serving as a student assistant for the Lions in the 2012-13 season.
“He has three semesters left and wants to come back and get his degree,” Baldwin said. “We’re going to have him in a (student) coaching capacity, and (class) schedule permitting we’d like to have him at the golf course (Carter Plantation) three times a week with the guys.
“He’s just a great example of a guy who does the right thing. He gets to the golf course, he puts his hat on and goes to work. There’s no guessing on what he’s going to work on; he knows what he’s going to work on and he’s very dedicated and committed to the game.”
