Former Southeastern Louisiana second baseman Brock Hebert has signed a professional contract with the Seattle Mariners and is temporarily joining the Mariners’ rookie league team in Arizona.

Hebert, a Bourg, La., product and three-year letterwinner for the Lions, was selected in the 14th round of the Major League

Baseball Draft after leading the Southland Conference in hitting (.374 ), runs scored (58) and stolen bases (36). Earlier this month he was named a Louisville Slugger All-American (third team) and is the Southland’s 2012 hitter, and player, of the year.

In his career, Hebert hit .335 and his 213 hits, just three hits behind former teammate Cody Gougler, rank fifth on the school’s all-time list. He scored 150 runs (fourth all-time), drove in 123 runs (10th all-time) and his 70 career stolen bases fall one shy of tying the school record. He owns the Southeastern single-season stolen base record (36).

Hebert is expected to be reassigned by the end of the week to the Mariners’ advanced rookie team, the Pulaski Mariners, in the Appalachian League. The team is based in Pulaski, Va.
