Knoll embarks on final cross-country journey on foot

UPDATED: Wednesday, May 30, 2012 - 10:23am

Former Marine Marathoner Tom Knoll is just underway with his journey across the county on foot. Monday the former marine marathoner made a stop in Baton Rouge.

“My goal was to raise a million dollars in charity and we did that last year. So this is sort of a victory lap. One more chance to raise money for all the charities,” Knoll said.

Knoll is does it all. At the age of 79 he’s embarked on his final run to raise money to help others. A journey he started over 30 years ago.

“I consider the running the easiest part. I do LSD, long slow distance.”

But what's not slow is the time it takes for his efforts to reach those he's set out to help. For example, take 3-year old Kiara.

“She has cerebral palsy. As soon as we make enough money we can send her to Disney world and they will assign me someone else. So I will probably grant 20 wishes along the way going up the coast.”

His charity work doesn't stop there.

“I call it from the womb to the tomb. You have kids to veterans to senior citizens.”

Naturally, the former marine gives back to those who were injured in the line of duty.

“I'm a Korean and Vietnam veteran. In my second career I worked in intelligence so I am an Iraq and Afghanistan veteran. Everyone has their own political idea. Are we wrong or are we right? The troops don't, they are over there and they are great people.  We want to support our troops whether we agree with it or not,” Knoll said.

Knoll even has his own book out. It’s about the life of a long-distance runner with a life-long devotion to helping others. Sound familiar?
