The Indianapolis Colts released rookie John Boyett, who was arrested early Monday morning following an altercation involving police officers at a downtown bar.

The 23-year-old safety, who was on the team's reserve/non-football injury list, faces charges of resisting law enforcement, disorderly conduct and public intoxication.

According to the police report, an employee of Tiki Bob's bar located a nearby police officer to report a very intoxicated man would not leave the area after he was refused entry. When the officer went to the bar, the individual had left the scene.

A short time later, officers responded to the bar after the man, later identified as Boyett, attempted to gain entry into the bar again. As an officer went to handcuff Boyett, he reportedly pulled his arm out of the officer's grasp and fled the scene.

Officers were able to detain Boyett following a short foot pursuit. When asked to identify himself, Boyett responded, "You can't arrest me…I'm a Colts player," stated the police report. Officers also reported Boyett yelled at an officer, stating "I'm going to come back and break your jaw."

Police said Boyett sustained slight injuries to his arm and elbow in the incident.

Boyett was selected by the Colts in the sixth round of the 2013 NFL Draft.

Boyett commented on the incident on his Twitter page Tuesday afternoon, stating "I want to apologize to Mr. Irsay @JimIrsay , the Indianapolis Colts organization @Colts and the Indianapolis police. The Colts gave me an opportunity and I blew it. My behavior didn't and doesn't represent who I am. I am deeply embarrassed and disappointed in myself. All I can do now is learn from it and never repeat it. I look forward to showing my true character in the future."
