Ascension Christian High School announced today that they have made a decision on who will lead the Lions football program as head coach.

Ascension Christian High Principal Mark Pellegrin announced to the students and faculty at a general assembly on Friday, March 22, that the search for a new head coach for the five-year-old program was thorough and encompassed candidates from all across the state.

“After assessing the skills of nearly 50 applications and months of individual interviews and meetings, the search committee has agreed that the man who is going to lead our Lions team into new territory will be Josh Puryear,” he said.

With the announcement of Puryear as the new head coach the entire student body erupted in wild applause. Puryear has served the Lions football program as defensive coordinator for the last four years.

“Coach Puryear is a man of excellence in all that he does," Pellegrin noted. "He is diligent to preparation and motivated to high achievement in his daily life. That is a basic formula for success at every level.”

Pellegrin assured the students and the faculty that Coach Puryear will definitely lead a new team to chalk-up “Ws” next year.

Athletic Director Bryan Arceneaux added that Coach Puryear will have plenty of help as he takes on the 2013-2014 schedule. He said that the coaching staff has been through a few changes this year and more and more talent continues to assemble on the campus.

“We are fortunate to have the talent and quality of Paul Burguard as the new head baseball coach who has an extensive history of championships not only in baseball but in football as well.”

Arceneaux added that Burgard will support Puryear as assistant football coach during the fall semester.

Coach Puryear said that when he was asked to be the new head coach he was overwhelmed with excitement.

“What a privilege is to be blessed with this opportunity to lead our team as head coach. The hardest part for me the last couple of days was staying quiet until it was announced today.” Puryear added that building a program takes a specific focus and lots of energy. Excellence will be our theme this year both on and off the field. “Our team will be known for all the right reasons. Stay tuned,” Puryear added.

He said that the Lions football schedule changed for the new season and they will be playing more Division I-A schools around the state.

“The district schedule is tough, but we belong in this district," he said. "It will train us. It will prepare us. And it will give us the competitiveness and the heart to rise as a new state championship contender.”
