SCOTLANDVILLE, LA — In an attempt to prevent heart-related deaths among high school athletes, one of the partners in Mayor Melvin L. “Kip” Holden’s Healthy BR program, Jump Start Your Heart, Inc., will be providing free cardiac screenings for students from Scotlandville Magnet High School on today, August 8, from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m..
Jump Start Your Heart Inc. is a nonprofit organization that was founded in 2008 after the tragic death of Shannon Veal, who collapsed during a high school playoff basketball game at Glen Oaks High School and died of an undetected enlarged heart.
Dr. Steven Kelley, a local cardiologist, is a co-founder of this program and organization. Also participating in Thursday’s screenings will be another Healthy BR partner, the Blue Bus from Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center, as well as the City-Parish Emergency Medical Services. Both the Blue Bus and EMS have been partners in the project since 2010.
Over the past five years, Jump Start Your Heart Inc. has worked with individual schools to offer the screenings to student athletes in East Baton Rouge Parish and surrounding areas. The organization has also offered the screenings on a city-wide basis in the past.
Thursday’s screenings, which include an echocardiogram or ultrasound of the heart and an electrocardiogram or EKG, will be held at Scotlandville Magnet High School at 7870 Scotland Avenue. These diagnostic screenings are not currently required by the Louisiana High School Athletic Association.
