Zachary baseball hopes to make the most of its second chance

Everyone deserves a second chance. The Zachary baseball program is a big believer in that.

“We’ve taken a lot of criticism from everybody and we learned a little bit about ourselves. It was a learning experience for us,” Zachary senior outfielder Joe Pierce said.

A midseason brawl on the diamond had a Bronco team that makes a living in the playoffs banned from postseason play.

“Being a senior and having your season taken from you like that it was very tough to handle,” Pierce said

“We have a tradition to live up to and we had to play like there is no tomorrow. That's the way we felt at one point,” fellow senior Jameson Fisher added.

Instead of folding up the tent and going home the team continued to fight as if they were actually in the title hunt. It paid off. A last minute vote Friday by the LHSAA put the Broncos back in the playoffs.

“It’s probably the most emotional I’ve ever been. The night before I thought was my last game of baseball and thought I would never play the game again,” Pierce said

“As coaches we tell these guys you never now what tomorrow is going to bring. And that this game is going to end for everybody one day. These guys are excited and they realize the game can be taken awbaay just like that,” interim head coach Greg Williams said.

“We knew in the back of our mind that we had a chance. What we got was a miracle,” Fisher said before the Broncos first round playoff game against Mandeville.

Now it’s not so much about getting that second chance, but making the most of it. Pierce and the Broncos say they understand that.

“We are defiantly going to take advantage of the second chance that we have. We are not going to change anything because we have been on a roll. It’s kind of a mentality thing, once the playoffs roll around it's go time,” Pierce said.

Zachary defeated Mandeville on Tuesday, 6-0. The Broncos will host Hahnville in the second round on Saturday.
