Hargas, Janway lead Southeastern over Privateers, 11-0

Hargas, Janway lead Southeastern over Privateers, 11-0
Sports
Wednesday, March 30, 2011 - 11:04pm

Cass Hargis went 3-for-5 with an RBI double while Josh Janway and four relievers combined on a seven-hitter as Southeastern Louisiana defeated New Orleans, 11-0, Wednesday night at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field.

Jonathan Pace, Justin Boudreaux and Jeff Harkensee had two hits each while freshman Britt Gautreaux drove in a pair of runs as Southeastern (17-9) collected 13 hits and broke open a close game with a five-run sixth inning and a four-run eighth.

Southeastern built a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Alex Marse hit a double down the right-field line off UNO starter Robert Ormsbee (0-5) and scored two batters later when Hargis doubled to right. The Lions added an unearned run in the fourth inning when Jacob Fisher reached on a two-out single, moved to second on a throwing error and scored when Hargis beat out a throw to first and advanced on a second throwing error by the Privateers.

Pace, who had his 21-game hitting streak snapped in Tuesday’s contest at Southern, hit a two-run single off UNO reliever Scott Stonestreet before Boudreaux followed with an RBI single and Harkensee a two-run double to give Southeastern a 7-0 lead.

The Lions sent 10 men to the plate in the eighth as Michael Rutland scored on an UNO error and Gautreaux followed with a single through the right side to drive in Jared Ashford and Harkensee.

Janway (2-0) earned his second win over the Privateers in eight days after allowing two hits and fanning five in four innings of work. Joseph Koon struck out two batters in two innings on the mound before Matt Pittari, Dylan Hills and Jacob Ott kept the Privateers off the scoreboard over the final three innings.

Beau Boudreaux led UNO (1-23) at the plate going 3-for-4 with a stolen base. Michael Tedesco went 2-for-4 with a double for the Privateers. UNO loaded the bases in the ninth after Nolan Church and Cameron Wheeless led off with singles and Chris Geronimo drew a two-out walk, but Ott got Kal Bonura to ground out to second to end the game.

Southeastern will return to action on Friday when it plays host to Southland Conference rival Lamar at 6 p.m. The series will continue on Saturday at 2 p.m. with the finale set for Sunday at 1.

All three games can be heard in the Hammond area on KSLU-FM (90.9) and on the internet at www.LionSports.net. Tickets are available by calling the Southeastern Athletic Ticket Office at (985) 549-5466 or on-line at www.LionSports.net.
